Confidence

All you need is love

You can build your baby's confidence and self-esteem from the moment they're born.

  • Speak in a gentle voice, never shout or use harsh tones
  • Give your baby plenty of cuddles and handle her gently, she may enjoy gentle massage
  • Respond to your baby quickly when she cries - when you comfort her she'll feel more secure, and learn the world is a safe and friendly place
  • Bond with your baby by showing warmth and love
  • Help your baby to understand the world - point things out and talk to her about everything because this helps your baby feel that the world is an exciting place and that she's important in it

Mirrors used in play can help older babies to notice what they look like and what their bodies can do. Every new, exciting discovery and achievement gradually builds your baby's sense of 'self' and a picture of 'who I am'.

Building confidence as babies grow older

In the beginning, babies hardly realise they're separate people, but as they grow and develop, they gradually learn about where they end and others begin.

Suggestions

  • Chat and listen to your baby - this will show you feel she's important and worth listening to, while building good self-esteem.
  • Play with your baby - this shows you like spending time together having fun.
  • Encourage independence - as soon as you think she can manage something for herself, let her. Take it slowly so she can feel proud of what she has done and doesn't get discouraged with too many setbacks.
  • Provide different toys and activities - this helps to stimulate your baby.
  • Praise her often as she tries and learns new things.
